The Empowered Meno Mom

 Hello beautiful people!

This is your friend Adriana and I want to welcome you all to my new blog “The Empowered Meno Mom”.

I want to start by saying that I am not a health professional and the purpose of my blog is solely to share my own personal experiences and to reach out to an audience of women who are going through challenges and joys during the transition into menopause. If you are experiencing symptoms that are preventing you from performing your daily job or tasks, please contact your family doctor so you can be referred to the right practitioner to help you.

First, I want to tell you that, like many of you, I have always been inspired by many women who are doing so much in their daily lives to help their families, their friends, their communities and themselves, giving the best of them without even realizing that their contributions create a huge impact in the lives of so many people.

I grew up in Colombia and I have lived outside of my native country for more than half my life. I have had the opportunity to live in the U.S and I am currently living in Canada and even though there are many similarities between the two countries, there are also big differences in many areas but what I have found commonality in is in the approach to women’s health in both countries.

As a woman in my mid 50s, I have been analyzing the way in which the whole health care system here in Canada and in the U.S works and I have come to the conclusion that I have to act as if I were the CEO in the business of my own health.

I started feeling the symptoms and the many changes during perimenopause in my mid forties. Well…honestly, maybe those changes and symptoms started in my early forties but I really had no clue about what to expect during perimenopause and when I would know for sure I was in perimenopause. Sounds familiar? It so happens that I got pregnant at 43 and three days after my 44th birthday, I gave birth to my amazing daughter who is now 12 years old! Yes, I’m 56 and I have a 12 year old daughter. Looking back, I can say that when I gave birth to my daughter my body was probably saying: “Am I supposed to have a hot flush now or should I put my energy into producing milk for my newborn baby girl”. I was really blessed to get pregnant without any IVF treatments and my pregnancy was a relatively smooth one. The worst part of it was the never ending “morning sickness”; it was more like a “whole day sickness”.  Even though I was really nervous about becoming a mom at 44, I was lucky to have a great OBGYN who was very reassuring throughout the length of my pregnancy and I can't say enough about the support of my wonderful husband. I went full term and my baby was born one day before the due date!!

And you must be thinking, why is she talking about her pregnancy and menopause at the same time? Well, the main purpose of this blog is to connect with women who have experienced the many changes and symptoms of menopause while raising their little children. I know that many women in my generation have become mothers at later age for different reasons and being an older mom can feel very isolated at times. I’m here to listen to you and to share my experience by telling you what has helped me, what has not and how I am coping with the different aspects of being in menopause with a young daughter.

If any of the topics that I mentioned here resonates with you and you would like to be part of this new community, please write to me in the comments section with your thoughts, questions and suggestions. We can create an amazing support system to help each other navigate this chapter of our lives. I would love to hear from you!

With much love,

Adriana
